As of September 30, Canada will no longer mandate COVID-19 vaccination for visitors. The rule that was in effect prohibited Major League Baseball (MLB) teams from taking unvaccinated players on their rosters when they traveled to Canada. The restriction was subsequently applied to those players until the end of the series. But baseball isn’t the only sport affected by COVID; look at this article about COVID-19 and the Start of the NHL Season 22-23.

A few teams, including the Philadelphia Phillies, had several players on the restricted list after crossing the border. When the club traveled to Toronto in July, Nola, Realmuto, Gibson, and Bohm were unavailable.

Players won’t have to be added to the restricted list anymore, and will be permitted to travel with their team now that Canada is abolishing the mandate. Given that the MLB playoffs for 2022 are set to start on October 7, it’s timely. Unvaccinated players would have been forced to choose between getting the shot in time for the playoffs or missing the entire series, but lucky for them, this isn’t an issue anymore.

The New MLB Playoffs: How Do They Work?

The top two division champions from each league receive a bye in the first round under MLB’s new 12-team playoff structure. Next, the No. 3 seed from the remaining division plays the No. 6 seed from the worst wild card club, while the Nos. 4 and 5 seeds from the top two wild card teams face off in the other series. How Will the MLB Playoffs Be Structured in 2022?

Established a new postseason format under the most recent collective bargaining agreement. This is how it goes:

  • In each league, three division champions and three additional teams with the best winning percentage advance to the postseason.
  • The wild card series is a best-of-three format, with the higher seed hosting each game, and the top two clubs in each league receive an automatic bye into the division series. While the top two wild card clubs compete against one another, the third division champion hosts the lowest wild card team.
  • The division series is a best-of-five matchup with the standard home-field advantage. The No. 4 vs. No. 5 wild card series winner will take on the top seed. The No. 3 vs. No. 6 wild card series winner will take on the No. 2 seed. The league championship and World Series continue to be best-of-seven contests with the conventional home-field format.

MLB Postseason, New Format Explained

As a result of the new collective bargaining agreement that the MLB, and the Mayor League Baseball Player Association (MLBPA) signed in March. 12 teams will now qualify for the playoffs instead of 10.

Each conference will have six playoff teams in the 12-team format: three division winners and three wild cards. These are how they will be seeded:

  • 1 seed: Most successful overall
  • 2 seed: Second-best record among division winners
  • 3 seed: third-best record for division victories
  • 4-6 seeds: Three non-division champions’ best records (in order of record)
    • Will Changes Be Made to the Current Playoff Structure in 2022?

Unlike in previous years, an additional playoff squad from each league will compete in the playoffs. In addition, no tiebreaker matches to choose the playoff teams in 2022.

The No. 3 seed will play at home against the No. 6 in a three-game series in the wild-card round. The No. 4 seed will play host to the No. 5 seed.

How Did the Playoff Format Evolve Over Time?

Four teams were involved in the first playoff versions. Two teams played in the playoffs before 1969, when only the World Series existed. Then, starting in 1969 and continuing until 1994, four teams participated in the postseason (the champions of the four divisions).

The playoffs featured eight teams starting in 1995, and ten clubs entered the playoffs in 2012, including four wild card winners and six division champions. Before the divisional series, one game served as a single-elimination wild-card game for each conference.Used this up to 2019, and the issue reappeared in 2021. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic interrupting the season in 2020, an unprecedented 16 teams—eight of each league—participated in the playoffs.
